eCommerce store owners tend to think that if they could only get more traffic, they’d make more money. You have a great product, so if more people saw it, more would buy. Pretty simple. Makes sense.

But you know what? Most of the time, that’s not the case.

More traffic is not going to automatically drive sales.

Most of the time, there is other work that can be done, too.

What is your conversion rate? That is, what percentage of people who visit your website make a purchase?

Is it at least 1-2%? If not, you can make improvements. 1-2% is the e-commerce industry average for conversion rate.

What’s your AOV (Average Order Value)? On average, what do people spend with each purchase?

Facebook ads perform best if it’s over $50.

If you’re not above these stats, you’ll need EVEN MORE traffic to get those higher ROIs (Return On Investment–how much money you make vs. how much you spend). This means that you’ll need to spend more money and effort driving traffic to your site for each sale.

There are other ways to make more sales without driving more traffic to your eCommerce store.

There are a few easy things you can implement to improve your conversion rate and AOV:

Conversion Rate Optimization:

  • Do you have a clear CTA (call to action)?
  • Does each product page have 6-8 product images?
  • Are you using product videos on each page?
  • How easy is your checkout process?

Increase AOV:

  • Upsell on your product pages with related and complementary products.
  • Bundle your products together.
  • Offer free shipping over $X.

More traffic is great, and social media advertising WILL get you that. But if you’re lacking in these these KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), more traffic won’t solve your revenue problems.
